Gallery of Member's Ponds - Kardynski
Ron & Sue Kardynski, two of the MKPC BOD took on a six month project in 2010 replacing their outdated 1,200 gallon pond with a new 8,000 gallon pond. Their original plans called for a Rhino bottom drain with diffuser, Savio skimmer, Cyclone I vortex tank, Ultima II 10,000 Bead Filter, Sequence 7,800 pump, 130 watt Smart V UV light and a bio fall with two smaller falls. Next to the pond an independent 250 gallon stock tank converted into a bog. Prior to starting this summer project we were pleased to accommodate Mamoru & Taro Kodama for their Koi Academy. It didn't take long before Mr. Mamoru Kodama asked to see our plans and offer a few suggestions. In addition to our current plans we added a 650 gallon brush filter box that is fed from the bottom drain through the vortex and returns through the biofalls. This part of the system remains running all year long. A second sequence pump of 3,700 gph draws from the skimmer and back into the pond through two mid level returns. This part of the system is shut down during the winter months. The real challenge beside our battle with Mother Nature was to conceal the vortex, brush filter box and sequence pump under a deck that would allow us access for backwashing and system maintenance. This was accomplished by constructing a deck of 100% pvc composite with hinged panels. The projected started on May 26th and ended on November 13th as we were simultaneously putting up our winter dome and completing the deck. We enjoyed the new pond this winter in the dome but we are really looking forward to relaxing summer by the pond.
New Pond

It begins

Gonna need a bigger shovel
So much digging to do so we rented a backhoe and got some friends to help.

Bottom drain
Working on fine tuning the shape and getting ready for pipes

Installing drains and returns
This is the down and dirty of it.

Liner
Working on the main pond liner

Rocking it!
And securing the liner with landscape rocks.

Coffin?
Here's the neatly lined brush box container.

Decking
The brush box decking is going in.

In the Dome
The finished pond in winter is fully housed in this dome - an oasis in the snow.
